Do You Think They’ll Hold a Parade?

Imagine my surprise–and horror–when I saw this on the Park Seed calendar:

January 21 — Squirrel Appreciation Day — They’re cute, furry, and plain irresistible as they sit munching on a nut, their tails twitching and their bright eyes shining with intelligence. So take the opportunity to watch them — I bet they’ll make you smile!

Are they kidding?  Who would write something like that, besides Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Unappreciated.

We will not be breaking out the nuts here.  Frankly, I’m suspicious of anyone who does, but go ahead.  Just don’t tell me.

Several friends have sent this video of a Rube Goldberg-type squirrel contraption to me,  in case I wanted to build something squirrely for the little bastards in our yard.

I don’t think so.

  1. I’m with you! I’d appreciate it if they packed their little bags and headed off for the Big Squirrel Parade. If they don’t make it back to my place, I’m fine with it, really.

  2. Ok, I won’t tell you. Well maybe I will. I love those intellligent, athletic little cuties. I have none here and really regret that. I use to watch them for hours in Florida as I had put a feeding station out for only them. They put Cirque du Soleil to shame.

    1. Let me think, Patti. . . you’re in Arkansas, I’m in NC. . . how ’bout meeting me in Nashville, TN. That ought to be halfway, huh? I’ll be the one with the very large, wiggly gunnysack!

  3. Why do you hate squirrels so. They are the “bad boys” of the animal world and you have to admire their athletic prowess. They deserve to be fed just as much as birds

  4. Squirrel Appreciation Day? I don’t think so either! lol I never knew there was such a day. That video is something else! Someone has too much time on their hands! lol If I made such a contraption, they wouldn’t end up with a bowl of nuts, it would be straight in a trap to get carted away deep in the woods!!! xoxo

  5. In case you were wondering who to blame….Christy Hargrove from Asheville, North Carolina started Squirrel Appreciation Day on January 21, 2001. Christy is a wildlife rehabilitator in North Carolina, and is is affiliated with the Western North Carolina Nature Center.

Today is also National Hug day. You will be happy to know that you do not have to hug a squirrel.

  6. You gotta’ admire the little buggers. They face challenges head on and they don’t accept the concept of failure.

Oh — I’m sorry. Damn squirrels! Horrid little beasts!

  7. LOL ! I’m not going to march in the parade but I don’t hate squirrels as long as they stay in the park and mind their own business.
